Cordyline 01:10
Cordyline © Danny McDonald 2018 Sunshine and rain A whistle from a football game To the burbs on a metro train Huey blue to moody grey Cordyline Five-Thirty-Six Laserlight and bessabricks Things we found at the local tip Bricabrac and nature strips Cordyline

The suburb I grew up in © Danny McDonald 2018 Well the jacaranda’s blooming And the fig tree’s dropping fruit The weatherboards are wearing And the letterbox looks full Everybody goes their own way Every family must move on We’ve been gone for 20 years now And it still feels wrong And the breezeblock fence that Dad built Wants a decent lick of paint Like the mural on the shed door And the rusty wrought iron gate And the suburb I grew up in Ain’t the same place anymore And the suburb I grew up in Is looking worn It’s the suburb I grew up in And nothing more
3.
Judge me for my art, not where I live © Danny McDonald 2018 Coffee stains in a hazy sky Factory hums right through the night Disheveled earth and rusty air Commission homes in disrepair Welcome to my town Welcome to my town Hardened men, machinery Unions rule the industries Footy talk at the TAB Vomit bombs and red meat This is my town Welcome to my town Judge me for my art, not where I live Judge me for my art, not where I live Judge me for my art, not where I live
4.
Commuter’s lament © Danny McDonald 2018 Into the amber morning October light Paper shops and coffee cups collide Trams full, train’s late, cars gridlocked in line It’s a midweek Melbourne work commuting life Riding home through the rain in the fading light Into the Arkley home filled suburban light Cars veer, trucks swerve, tram tracks slip and slide It’s a midweek Melbourne work commuting life
5.
Keeping the dogs at bay © Danny McDonald 2018 He’s got a month on a factory shut Says he only in it for the bucks He’s crook with a nasty bark And the missus is on his back But it’s keeping the dogs at bay She’s packing shelves at Coles new world In the dead of night out in the burbs But you’ll never hear her complain ‘Cos it’s getting the mortgage paid And it’s keeping the dogs at bay

--

Danny McDonald has long been hailed as one of Australia’s finest and most underrated songwriters.

Since the early 90’s he’s released, played on, helped write, recorded or appeared on over 75 CD, vinyl and digital records both as a solo artist and alongside a growing list of well-known Australian artists.

‘Modern architecture’ builds on McDonald’s growing body of classic guitar pop work while showcasing a master songwriter in his prime.

From the melodic jangle of ‘Cordyline’ to the punky pop of ‘Judge me for my art, not where I live’, there’s a noticeable depth to this collection of songs that confirms what indie pop fans have known for a long time.

‘Modern architecture’ marks McDonald’s first partnership with producer Craig Pilkington and singer Anna Burley, both from much-loved Melbourne band the Killjoys.

While Pilkington’s classy engineering and musical performances add the sheen, Burley’s angelic vocals provide the perfect counterpoint for McDonald’s powerful melody lines.

Meanwhile, long-time collaborators Tim Mills (bass guitar) and David Kleynjans (drums) hold it all together with their watertight rhythms and pop sensibilities.

‘Modern architecture’ will be released in February 2020 on limited edition vinyl, CD and via all digital platforms through Melbourne’s Popboomerang Records.
